Classic Review: BioShock (2007)

Welcome to Rapture.
BioShock was one of the 7th gen's most unique titles. Serving as a spiritual successor to System Shock 2, BioShock improves on it, while adding new features of it's own. Does fighting Big Daddies and exploring Rapture feel old, you might ask? Nope.

Story- Set in the 1960's.You take the role of Jack, a lone survivor from a plane crash, who eventually swims to a nearby lighthouse. However, he ends up being taken to the underwater city of Rapture, where there is no king or god, only man. Throughout his journey in Rapture, Jack will meet some partially sane and insane characters, giving BioShock the survival horror feel.

Gameplay- BioShock is a first-person shooter, with some role-playing elements. In addition, plasmids, which genetically modifies genes, can increase the chances of survival in the fallen city of Rapture. Plasmids, which runs on EVE, can let you shoot lighting, control fire, use telekinesis, and more.To buy more plasmids, you'll need ADAM, which comes from deep sea slugs. Weapons include revolvers, machine guns, shotguns, and more. Best of all, they can be upgraded to deal even more damage. At some point of the game, stealth is required, because of two reasons.

The first reason is, you don't a lot of ammo. Also, ammunition is sometimes hard to come by and scarce. The second, approaching enemies requires careful planning. If you go without a plan, running and gunning, you'll attract a lot of attention and enemies will gang up on you. The most notable and deadly enemy are the Big Daddies.

Big Daddies guard the Little Sisters, which you can harvest ADAM from or save them, which also affects the ending. Big Daddies are a serious threat and require some strategy. Finally, you can hack into vending Machines, in which you can buy items at a reduced price; and create items which will provide help during combat.

Visuals & Sound- For it's time, it was the one of the most detailed and artistic games. It even holds up pretty well today. Character designs are impressive and fits the setting, the city of Rapture is breathtaking and will immerse you, and the weapon design is detailed and impressive. Also, the water effects in the game is amazing to look at. Voice work in BioShock is great. Characters have a life-like feel and fits the time period. In terms of Visuals and sound, BioShock succeeds.

Overall- BioShock does something unique with the FPS genre by introducing the concept of plasmids, which are great to use. The city of Rapture is amazing and is filled with people who lost their sanity and are willing to kill you. BioShock is one of the best games of the 7th generation.

OUTSTANDING
