A sleek juggernaut. |
Kind of late to this, but the Sony PlayStation 4 turned 10 years-old last November! The PS4's often regarded as Sony's second best-selling console ever at 117 million units sold-- which was a ways off the PS2's record 155 million-- but still ended up being a respectable feat. It also dominated the 8th generation of gaming ever since the November 2013 release where Microsoft stumbled with its Xbox One console. For me, it wasn't until February 2014 that I got my PS4, along with Knack and Need for Speed: Rivals. I remember really liking the design of the original console because it looked way more sleek compared to Xbox One.
The earliest PS4 experience I recall was playing Infamous: Second Son for the first time and being blown-away by the next-gen graphics back in 2014. It's one of those games that I look back on fondly when life was really good. Another one that I had a blast with and obsessively followed news of was Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, which looked amazing and I played the hell out of it.
I really loved the features PS4 brought such as Rest Mode that allows you to turn the system off while keeping some of its functions active. For example, a game gets paused until the next time you play it, digital games/patches can be downloaded as long as you're connected to the internet, and controllers get charged automatically. Speaking of that, the Dual Shock 4 controller was a huge upgrade over DS3 in looks and comfort. It even made it hard to go back to my PS3 when I wanted to clear my backlog. That said, the infamous loud fan noise and occasionally slow UI were annoyances I had with the console.
Some of my favorite exclusives on the system were:
1- Bloodborne (2015): My gateway game to FromSoftware and Souls genre. It was a seriously tough game back when I first played it and ultimately became my favorite game on PS4.
2- Infamous: Second Son (2014): A graphical showcase of what the PS4 was capable of and an enjoyable game with fun power-ups to play with.
3- Uncharted 4: A Theif's End (2016): I was hyped for the game as it marked the end of Nathan Drake, the legendary thief's story and it was a jaw-dropping adventure with lots of fun moments and non-stop action.
4- Gravity Rush 2 (2017): Hugely underrated game and being a fan of Gravity Rush on PS Vita, I had a lot of fun with it. It used the PS4's more beefy hardware and came up with more awe-inspiring levels and gravity-defying gameplay segments.
5- Resogun (2013): A launch game for the system, it was an extremely fun and challenging shoot 'em up that boasted neat visual effects as you shoot down aliens with your tiny space ship. Definitely among the more forgotten games in the library.
And that's my brief but personal experiences with the PS4! I've been heavily gaming on it for a long time and enjoyed all kinds of games on it, so it's definitely a console I'll remember for years to come. Here's hoping the PS5 manages to live up to it.
