Classic Review: Kirby & the Amazing Mirror

Released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, Kirby & the Amazing Mirror was one of the best platformers on the GBA. Like other GBA games, it made it's way to the Wii U Virtual Console Service. Is it worth giving it a try after 10 years?

Story- The story follows Kirby being sliced into four copies of himself by a Dark Meta Knight and must chase after him in the Mirror World, where any wish reflected in the mirror will come true. It's now up to Kirby and his three other companions to collect the mirror shards and bring peace to Dreamland.Story isn't Kirby games main focus, they're silly and simple, but enjoyable.

Gameplay- Gameplay is where Kirby games shine.Simple and straight forward, Amazing Mirror retains the classic style of Kirby platforming, such as sucking enemies' abilities and using it against them, but with new twists. For example, the map layout is similar to Metroid, where there are different areas to explore.Areas can be completed at any order, which gives a sense of freedom to the game. However, the map can be confusing to navigate and could have been more detailed in showing where there are any collectibles and mirror shards.Another notable feature is the addition of four Kirbys. Kirby can call other Kirbys to aid him during bosses, which can be helpful at times and is a nice addition in the series. Multiplayer let's a friend joins in story mode and participate in mini-games, which is fun.

Besides the story mode, mini-games such as Speedy Eaters, Crackity Crack, and Kirby Wave Ride are enjoyable.Speed Eater is being the first to eat any food that's under the lid; Crakity Crack is where Kirby's might measured  by smashing a huge boulder deep in the ground; Wave Ride is a simple, but addictive game, that has Kirby racing other Kirbys in waves. All of these mini-games add tons of additional hours and replay value to the game.

Visuals- the visuals are cute and good looking, but nothing that special. What's great about the environments and character models are that they are well detailed. Pretty standard for a GBA game.

Sound- Amazing Mirror's collection of music is pretty good. Some are quite memorable, while others are forgettable. Still, it's classic Kirby goodness.

Overall- Kirby & the Amazing Mirror is a great platformer for the Game Boy Advance. It's stands out from most Kirby games and is one those unique games on the system. The mini-games are enjoyable and adds a lot of replay value.
