BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Review

Arc System Works' newest entry in the BlazBlue series is impressive. BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma features new characters, improved fighting mechanics, and tons of extras. Is Chrono Phantama one of the year's best fighters?

Story-  Following the events of Continuum Shift, Ragna the Bloodedge is left with one final task: put an end to Yuuki Terumi.Characters from previous games make a return, while introducing some new ones.Story mode is divided into three sections: Six Heroes, Chrono Phantasma, and Sector Seven.

To those who are unfamiliar with the BlazBlue lore, the "Teach Me More, Miss Litchi!" mode will give newcomers a brief (and hilarious) recap of the previous games. The story mode in Chrono Phantasma is really great, but is structured in a linear fashion, compared to it's predecessors.

Story mode is interesting, but drags
for a while with lots of dialogue to read.

Gameplay- Chrono Phantasma plays as a 2D fighter with some crazy gameplay elements.New to the game are the "drive" mechanic, which lets characters preform a series of powerful attacks. The "Burst" mechanic can cancel some combos and break your opponents guard. Most notably, when activated, the "Overdrive" mechanic can be used to power up your character's abilities and access more moves. All of these additions are welcome and adds more depth to the game.

The fighting mechanics
are neat and well-handled.

As for the character roster, there are over 24 characters. The four new characters include, Bullet, a fast and agile mercenary; Azrael, a powerful and deadly heavyweight; Izayoi, a fighter of justice and is incredibly strong; and Amane, an unpredictable traveling dancer.

In addition, three more characters are available. Kagura Mutsuki, a colonel of the NOL and a funny guy (can be unlocked by completing story mode or bought via PSN).The villainous Yuuki Terumi and the mad scientist Professor Kokonoe can only be bought via PSN.

Also, if you are new to BlazBlue, you can try the Tutorial section, which is very extensive and detailed, covering everything you need to know about the game's mechanics. After that's done, you can practice what you learned in Training Mode.

Visuals & Sound- The BlazBlue series has one of the best art-styles in fighting games.Character sprites have been re-drawn and refined.Backgrounds are full of detail and suits the atmosphere quite well.If you're a fan of anime, then you'll dig BlazBlue's charming style. In terms of sound, it's great.Characters have their music remixed and the voice acting is great and well-done.

The visuals and character sprites
are colorful and full of detail.

Overall- BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma is 2D fighting at it's best. The fighting mechanics are deep and responsive, the character roster is unique, and the story is interesting. Chrono Phantama is one of the year's most stylish and best fighters.
