Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS Review

The latest entries in Nintendo's all-out fighting game series Super Smash Bros. are here.Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS are the latest and both equally great fighters on their respective platforms. Both versions are filled with lots content and characters, making them the best Super Smash Bros. games yet. Does the these iterations in the crazy Smash Bros. fighting series surpass its predecessors?

Gameplay- Super Smash Bros. is a fighting game in which up to four players can do battle. But wait, throw in some crazy items and power-ups and Nintendo characters you get the most crazy and over-the-top fighting game series there is.Its also the source of multiple rages against friends and family who are playing the game, but nevertheless, everyone is having fun.Personally, everyone who played a Smash game with me either despised or left me for other games, because I was constantly launching them into the air and winning. But hey, its fun when you're winning.

Nintendo's all-star cast are back,
 now with more smash!
A grand addition to the series is character customization.Any character from the roster can be customized by changing their abilities and skills, which is something you should do when playing in harder stages.Furthermore, Miis can join the fight. There are three types of classes to choose from: brawler, sword fighter, and gunner; all of which has their own abilities and skills. Also, custom characters and Miis can be transferred from the 3DS to the Wii U versions of Smash, and vice versa.

The feature that some will probably overlook is Stage Builder mode; in which you can create you're very own stage with music and platforms, though it a bit simplistic. If you have an Amiibo figure, you can train it against other computer-controlled players for it to earn experience, which is a pretty neat feature.

Mii fighters and customization options
are great additions to the series.
As for online features, Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U is divided into two modes. The first, "For Fun", which features random stages and items (which is fun, by the way) while "For Glory" has more difficult and challenging stages.Online mode is definitely recommended if you're either bored or looking for a challenge (which there is).In terms of extras, there is a lot! From music to characters to stages.Similarly, Classic Mode features a difficulty setting similar to that of Kid Icarus: Uprising, in which you raise or lower the difficulty. The most interesting part ,however, is that if you raise the difficulty, the more rare rewards and items you'll get (before doing that, consider training mode, cause its really hard).

The Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. is best suited for those who would like to play on a big screen with friends, since it features up to 8 players at once and high definition visuals. There are three exclusive modes for the Wii U: Smash Tour, Special Orders, and Event mode.To start things off, Smash Tour is a board game similar to the Mario Party series, in which up to 4-players can engage in battles, earning coins and rewards along the way. While it tries to fun and random at times, I didn't pay much attention to it; playing with friends, however, can change things up a bit.Furthermore, Special Orders are basically challenges set by the Master Hand (which I fully despise) while Event mode is where 2-players can engage in battles, both of these modes are entertaining and offers some nice ideas.

Smash Wii U is full of content and
most enjoyable with friends.
The 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. is what you expect, crazy fighting, but on a handheld.Exclusive features are Smash Run & SmashStreet.Smash Run is the equivalent of the Wii U's Smash Tour. However, Smash Run, has you earning stat points as well as power-ups by defeating countless enemies compared to the Wii U's Smash Tour.Personally, I've been playing Smash Run the most and literally enjoyed it.SmashStreet is a which incorporates StreetPass is great, although not that interesting

Smash 3DS has the core mechanics, but
is limited compared to Smash Wii U.
Presentation- For the first time, the Super Smash Bros. series features stunning high definition visuals. Also, character models and stages are detailed and pleasing.Furthermore, the sound in the game is great. With remixes and original tracks from games such as the Super Mario, Metroid, Fire Emblem, The legend of Zelda, and more.In addition, Smash Wii U features exclusive stages such Wii fit studio (which is one my favorites), Plautena's Temple, and the famous, Hyrule Temple. All of these features and more makes the Wii U version the more complete and refined of the two.

Smash Wii U is stunning
thanks to the HD visuals.
Also for the first time, Super Smash Bros. makes its first ever transition to a handheld, and it looks and plays just as great as its console counterpart. The cel-shaded visuals are nice touch and looks great on the 3DS' screen. As for the sound, its similar to Smash Wii U, but you can't choose which tracks to play.Moving on, I enjoyed playing Smash on the go; the character roster is same, which is great, and the exclusive stages such as the Game Boy is really fun and challenging.

However, the 3DS has three main flaws (for me, at least): 1- It can be disorienting when playing with four players, because the screen zooms out, it hard to see where are you in the stage. 2- The 3D effect is good, but not what I hoped in mind.Stages and characters don't really feel that impressive in 3D (this is nitpicking, I know) 3- This is probably the most notable and sad of the three, is the breaking of the circle pad of the 3DS. This can become an issue if you're playing Smash 3DS extensively, which means losing your circle pad is imminent.Well, that's all for the rant in a review part!

The 3DS version of Smash Bros. looks
great makes some use of the 3D effect.
Overall- Either on the go or in home, both iterations of latest installment in the series are definitely recommended. However, if inviting friends or family members to play, Smash Wii U is THE version to get.If you rather play solo and on the go, then I recommend Smash 3DS with caution.Overall, the installments in the Super Smash Bros. series are both great, thanks to the exclusion of tripping and new additions to the core gameplay mechanics.Without a doubt Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is a strong Game of the Year contender.

Smash Wii U: OUTSTANDING
Smash 3DS: IMPRESSIVE
