Retro Review: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (PlayStation)

Escape The Nemesis.
Resident Evil 2 released back in 1998 for the PlayStation was a smash hit, selling multiple copies worldwide. Naturally, Capcom did a third entry in the Resident Evil series titled Resident Evil 3: Nemesis released back in 1999, also released in 2009 on PSN. This time, however, it's terrifying since you're being hunted by the non-stopping Umbrella-made creature, Nemesis; and also escape the severely infected Raccoon City. So how does Resident Evil 3 holds by today's standards? Let's survive again.

STORY- Resident Evil 3 takes place before and after the events of Resident Evil 2 in Raccoon City and S.T.A.R.S. Jill Valentine (get it?), a member of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) and is the heroine and one of the main survivors of the original Resident Evil. Throughout her rather unpleasant journey in a zombie-filled Raccoon City, she'll be outsmarting new creatures, solving new puzzles, and outrunning the S.T.A.R.S. killing machine, Nemesis.

Jill is back in a more zombie-
infested Raccoon City.

GAMEPLAY- Resident Evil 3 still plays similarly to it's predecessors, but sees new additions this time. The core gameplay is a bit action-focused this time, meaning there are more zombies this time. Fortunately, a dodging mechanic is introduced, which lets Jill evades incoming enemy attacks. Also, Jill can outsmart enemies either defensively or offensively by using the new 180 degree turn to evade them or shooting objects such as explosive barrels to destroy them. Furthermore, an ammunition-creating mechanic is introduced, which lets Jill create ammo from different gunpowder types.

Gameplay is still fresh and playable.
The most obvious addition is Nemesis, the Umbrella-made creature that will occasionally give you adrenaline rushes during the game. Nemesis is more powerful than Jill, can run twice as fast, chases Jill from one area to another, and worst of all, he can dodge incoming attacks and can use his rocket launcher. This is where another new gameplay mechanic is introduced. Unlike previous games, Jill has the option of either fighting Nemesis and defeating him (for mere seconds) or outsmart him and escape. Different actions means different outcomes thus adding more replay-value to the game.

He WILL find you and he WILL kill you.

PRESENTATION- Resident Evil 3 is a slight improvement over its predecessor in terms of presentation. Since RE3 takes place mainly outside of buildings, there is a sense of freedom to explore the destroyed Raccoon City. Also, the environments are looking more detailed and 'lively' than ever as well as the cutscenes. Furthermore, the voice work is still cheesy and so-so, but at this point its expected. However, the soundtrack is the best in terms of presentation. There are some pretty nice and memorable tracks, the save room is my favorite, and intense ones like the Nemesis showing up theme.

"STAAARS"- Nemesis.
OVERALL- Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is another terrifying entry in the series. The improvements and additions in gameplay are welcoming, especially the intimidating Nemesis. Despite its slightly short running time, centering the story on bad-ass Jill as a main character makes up for that. If you've played previous Resident Evil games, what are you waiting for? Resident Evil 3: Nemesis comes highly recommended.
EXCELLENT
