Rocket League (PS4) Review

High-Powered Football.
Rocket League is the latest non-traditional football game by developer Psyonix, who made the impressive and awkwardly titled game of the same vein, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars for the PS3 in 2008. The game's concept very simple, you control RC-like cars and play football. While it may sound very simplistic at first, there is a lot of depth into it. Without further haste, let's play some football!

GAMEPLAY- Playing as RC cars might sound silly and disjointing at first, but it will all come natural. You can perform neat aerial maneuvers which can save the ball from hitting your goal. There are boost spots which can refill the car's turbo tank which in turn allows for a short period of increasing speed. Predicting the ball is a tricky simply because everyone's is constantly after it. Speaking of that, the A.I. can be idiotic at times. At times, some team players will clumsy hit the ball on their own goal, giving you a free score, this isn't game-breaking in any way, but should be fixed.

When playing matches, you'll often unlock certain items such as new cars, hats, paint schemes, and more to customize you car. This neat feature adds more replay-value to the game.

The gameplay is fast, fluid, and chaotic.
Play a few matches and you'll get the idea of Rocket League. It's simple, yet addicting and difficult to master. Rocket League features many modes to choose from. You can start with practice mode to get a grasp of the concept then play a season or exhibition match and see if you've the hang of things.

However, the challenge lies in the online mode. Instead of clumsy computer-controlled opponents, real thinking people can provide lots of challenge and fun. I've played online mode with fellow friends against opponents in a 4v4 fashion, and it was a great time. It's quick and easy to find a fast match and join the fun. Online mode is absolutely recommended if you've grew bored of the other modes.

Playing 4-player split-screen with friends is enjoyable.
PRESENTATION- Unlike most sports games which tend to go for a more realistic fashion, Rocket League is simple and vibrant. The visuals are crisp and colorful with a steady frame-rate. The car design are fully detailed and plentiful, as well the tracks themselves. The sound in the game is good, while there isn't any actual dialogue or anything of some sort, the soundtrack is upbeat, energetic and catchy. It's fitting for a game like Rocket League.

The game's presentation is spot-on thanks to its
rather cute style.
OVERALL- While I'm not much of an online fanatic, the game's online mode kept me coming back for more matches, despite some slowdowns. And quite frankly, Rocket League is currently the most fun I had this year so far. Overall, Rocket League is a great football meets cars game that's even more fun to play with friends.
