Retrospective: Looking Back at the PS3

The PlayStation 3 is officially 10 years old today (in the US, at least)! Welcome to another retrospective and today we'll be looking at the 7th generation beast, Sony's PlayStation 3.

Originally announced in 2005, the PlayStation 3 was the successor to massively popular PlayStation 2 console. It wasn't until E3 2006 that we got a real look at the console's capabilities. Unfortunately, Sony's E3 event of that year was a disaster. An outrageous price of $599 ( 60GB edition), some less than impressive games, gimmicks, and a cringe-worthy presentation scared many consumers away. Despite all that, it was a powerful machine that gave Microsoft's Xbox 360 (released a year earlier) tough competition. The console launched on the 11th of November in Japan and on the 17th in the United States. Europe would get the console the following year on the 23rd of March. Sony expected the console to sell at most 6 million units, however, it under-performed and managed to sell 3.68 million units.

Those prices tho...

Despite the sales, the console's early years were good. Games such as Uncharted: Drake's Fourtune, inFamous, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots made the system a must-own and helped its sales. It wasn't until 2009 that Sony took an aggressive turn by releasing a slimmer, more affordable PS3- the PS3 Slim. Alongside Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Sony quickly turned the tides and was a force to be reckoned with. However, Nintendo's 7th gen. console, the Nintendo Wii, managed to outsell both PS3 and Xbox 360 in the end.
In 2012, the console saw an even more slimmer and affordable second revision with the PS3 Super Slim model. 2013 was probably the last year Sony stopped focusing much on the PS3 since its successor, the PlayStation 4, was on the way. Still, that doesn't mean the PS3 didn't get anything good. Uncharted developer Naughty Dog unleashed their much-anticipated game, The Last of Us. The game was received outstandingly well-received by fans and critics alike, and hit classic.

Fast forward three years onward and here we are looking back at the console. I have to say, I really did have a lot of fun playing games on my PS3. No wonder why most of the reviews here are mainly focused on the PS3. Originally, I got the Slim edition back in 2010. However, the audio mysterious stopped working months later and I abandoned it. My main console of choice was the 360 at the time. It wasn't until 2013 that I got the Super Slim solely to play Metal Gear Solid 4. Hell, if I recall correctly, I was so excited about MGS4 that I got it before I even got the console XD

That's it for this rather short retrospective. The PS3 was a fantastic machine for its time and many games on it were stellar as well. I know I didn't cover some of its technical specifications and those PlayStation Move controllers, but I'll leave those for another time. Until next time!
