What I'm Currently Playing [January 2018]

The year's much anticipated fighting game,
Dragon Ball: Fighter Z, launches late this month.

Happy new year, everyone. Last year was a rather busy year for gaming in general with high-profile games being released and some loot box-related scandals. Fortunately, 2018 should look a bit brighter since governments are planning to investigate the use of micro-transactions in games, but only time will tell. Speaking of time, these past weeks I've been enjoying the holidays while playing some great games such as the likes of:

Nex Machina (PC)

Hit, dodge, and survive.

From Resogun developer Housemarque, comes Nex Machina, a faced-paced arcade shooter. Nex Machina stresses players with non-stopping waves of enemies and a one-hit death system. Fortunately, there's plenty of power-ups and side-objectives that will players an edge in gameplay. Throw in some mesmerizing boss fights and level design that constantly challenges and Nex Machina's ones hell of a ride, despite its rather brief runtime.

Kingdom Hearts Final Mix HD (PS4)

Sora and friend shave aged well over the years.

I've been interested to jump into the Kingdom Hearts series for years now and what better time to start with the recent announcement of Kingdom Hearts III and the Final Mix collection hitting PS4? The first game holds up surprisingly well a decade later, mainly thanks to Square Enix's commendable remastering. While the camera system is still a pain many years later, gameplay has aged well with the real-time battle system demanding the player's constant focus. Sora's first outing is full of charm and thrills years later and I can't wait to review it once I see everything the game has to offer.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U)

The most ambitious Zelda game to date.

The long-awaited Zelda Wii U, now known as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have finally hit stores almost a year ago, to widespread critical acclaim nonetheless. I've been conflicted whether or not to buy the game on Switch or Wii U for a while, but I ultimately chose the Wii U version. Regardless of the system, Breath of the Wild packs stunning sceneries, solid gameplay mechanics (excluding the rather crappy weapon durability system), and one of the best stories the series has seen yet. While still early in the long adventure, I'm striving to review it by the end of the month, if possible. Until then, I'm definitely enjoying my time with Breath of the Wild so far.
