What I've Been Playing [July 2020]

Hey all, it's been a while since I lasted posted something and that's mainly due to me finally getting around to playing a bunch of my backlog games that I haven't paid much attention to for a while. That and I wanted to take a bit of a break for a month, so yeah. Anyway, I'm back to the usual routine and thought I'd come back talking about some of the games that I've recently been playing back in July!

.hack//G.U. Last Recode (PS4)

Welcome to The World.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode is a remastered collection of the original three .hack//G.U. games that came out back in the PS2 days alongside a fourth bonus chapter. Taking place in an MMORPG called "The World", we follow our main lead Haseo as he hunts down a rouge player named "Tri-Edge" after he killed Haseo's friend in-game and put her in a coma in real-life. Each of the four games makes up a part of the whole experience of G.U., showing Haseo's journey from an unlikable brat to a more mature leader. The characters were great as well and the story packed some memorable moments too.

The gameplay is your standard action RPG fare as you'll slash your way through enemies. Despite some of the repetitive nature of the dungeons and soundtrack, I still had fun with unlocking new skill moves and gear. The game shows its PS2 age with its aged textures and models but thankfully the HD remaster polishes things up nicely with the cutscenes looking stunning. For its hefty $50 price, the collection is packed with content and if you're planning on getting all trophies like I did, then it's going to take over a 100 hours. Definitely check out the demo if you're still on the fence about it.

Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (DS)

Twice the screens, four times the fun.

Tight gameplay and funny, over-the-top humour is what comes to mind when I think of the Mario and Luigi RPG series. Easily one of my favorites on the DS, Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time packs another adventure with the superstar bros Mario and Luigi, this time they meet their younger selves when the mushroom kingdom is being attacked by purple aliens known as the Schroobs. The story's gets more hectic with space aliens and time travel, but still retains the tongue and cheek humour the series is known for. Partners in Time retains the basic gameplay style of the last game, with you levelling up and attacking enemies with precise timings of button-presses. Since you're controlling four bros this time around, the game opens significantly with more puzzles to solve and special moves to pull off in battles.

The art-style and sprite-based visuals hold pretty well and the soundtrack is upbeat and fun to listen to as well. My major gripe with the game is that levels often tended to overstay their welcome and there's little to no replay value after the 17 hour adventure is over. Still, Partners in Time was an enjoyable game thanks to the entertaining story and solid gameplay.

Borderlands 3 (PS4)

A not so hot offering.

Man I completely forgot about Borderlands 3 last year. The sequel to the FPS hit that was Borderlands 2, the game follows a new group of vault hunters, as they aim to search the galaxy for the legendary vaults, which are said to be stashed with treasure. It won't be easy as the game's new villains-- The Children of the Vault-- are after the same goal and will make your journey a lot more chaotic. The game sees the return of characters from the previous games and the dark humour the series is known for, which is easily the most fun part of the game.

The gameplay is mainly unchanged, as you'll shoot and loot your way through the game's colorful enemies and huge environments. Borderlands 3 isn't a perfect sequel as the villains weren't as charismatic as Handsome Jack and just come off as annoying. Making things worse is that the game is poorly optimized. From frequent crashes to crappy frame-rates to lots of stuttering and pop-in textures that hinders the experience. It really lacks polish and often times feels like it's been rushed to meet a deadline. Still, it's a decent enough shooter that's more fun with friends, just not as great as the other games.
