What I've Been Playing Vol. 41

Abzu (PS4)

Explore a whole new world.

Abzu is an indie with a interesting idea, you get to play as a diver who journeys into the depths of the ocean, exploring the oceanlife and traversing through its many mysteries. While it sounds a bit bland, the game is anything but that. It features beautiful and lush backgrounds with lots of deep blue and green colors that are pleasing to see. It reminded me of Journey, which similarly had vibrant and serene scenery to enjoy. The gameplay was simplistic-- to its determent-- as you're just swimming around to the next level while briefly interacting with the oceanlife. It took around 2 hours to beat with little incentive to replay the adventure again aside from collectables. If you're a fan of smaller, more artistic type of games, then Abzu is worth a play.

Cat Quest II (PS4)

Another fun catventure!

The sequel to the pawtatstic Cat Quest, you follow another catventure this time alongside a dog companion as you must put an end to the war between cats and dogs. Cat Quest II is an action-RPG with much more bigger world to explore and fighting a bunch of enemies with either swords or magic. A new addition is the character swap feature (as you get to switch from cat to dog), the Lupus Kingdom of the dogs to explore, and the doubling-down of cat/dog puns. It got grindy at times, but the gameplay remained fun and interesting throughout the 8-10 runtime.

Ridge Racer 2 (PSN)

I recently subscribed to the PS Plus Premium tier to play the classic games catalogue, and as a fan of Namco's old games, I had to play Ridge Racer 2. Its a compilation of the Ridge Racer games featuring circuits, cars, and tracks from various RR games. An arcade racer, you'll be speeding and drifting through tracks, unlocking new tracks and cars to race in. There's a bunch of modes like single player, time attack, and multiplayer. By far the best parts for me was zipping through tracks, overtaking the competition while enjoying Ridge Racer 4's legendary soundtrack.

Syphon Filter (PSN)

I also got to play Syphon Filter released for the PS1. My only experience with the series was the PSP game Dark Mirror and it was a fun time. The first game is... well dated to say the least. You play as special agent Gabe Logan who must stop an evil terrorist from unleashing a deadly virus known as "Syphon Filter". The game is a third-person shooter with a focus on stealth. It's similar to Metal Gear Solid yet with a lot more flashy action, though the janky gameplay and vague level design might turn some players off. Still, if you can get past that, you'll find some enjoyment in the wacky plot and gameplay.
