What I've Been Playing Vol. 43

 Gran Turismo 7 (PS5)

Gran Tursimo 7 is the next mainline game in the famed Gran Turismo series and one that I've been looking forward to. Packing over 400 cars, new and returning courses, and a campaign mode that has you collecting cars of all kinds, it's a gripping racer that I've been enjoying. It starts out with you collecting cheap cars and competing in championships till you get enough credits to buy the more desirable like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and BMWs. The used car dealership and tuning from previous games are back and better than ever as you get to buy new and old cars and upgrading them your liking. You'll also earn driving licenses that'll let you unlock the more advanced races and they even teach you the basics of cornering, steering, and breaking in races.

Visually, it looks great and a slight step-up from Gran Turismo Sport with the cars and tracks looking great. That said, some of the NPCs, trees, and textures did look like they were from the PS3 era though. The soundtrack was good, mainly packing tracks from old games and featuring remixes of classical tracks as well. Personally, I felt that it needed more track selection as things start to sound repetitive the more you play. All in all, GT7 was a fun time and I enjoyed collecting and even learning my favorite cars. what sours the experience is like GTSport, it's always online as you can't play the campaign and save your data while offline.

Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (PS4)

Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a metroidvania based on the Record of Lodoss War anime that was a hit in the 90's. I didn't know anything about this game except that it looked like a really great time. It's a Castlevania: Symphony of the Night clone down to Deedlit's movement animations, but in a good way. The gameplay was fun, the bosses offered a good deal of challenge, and exploration was very rewarding. However, knock-back from enemy hits were annoying and often had you falling off platforms.

Story's a bit of miss since you'll need to be familiar with the anime to understand the character's backstories and world. You'll be playing as the titular elf Deedlit as she explores a mysterious labyrinth that delves into her past. The presentation was amazing with the visuals and soundtrack being top-notch as well (Stage 4's theme was my favorite). There were occasional stutters when the action got too heavy and character portraits during dialogue would've been a nice addition. All in all, it's one of the best metroidvanias that I've played and it made me interested in checking the anime.
